Difficult Conversations Coming Up?

Friday Oct 9, 2009

I am feeling your pain…

Meetings with direct reports that are likely to raise controversy are one of the things any manager hates, right?

Well yes…if that’s what it looks like to you.

One of the biggest problems with anticipating problematic meetings…is anticipating problematic meetings…

Let me explain: Often when i work with a manager one on one and we roleplay a difficult conversation that they have coming up the fact that they expect difficulties translates into tension in their bodies, strain in their voices,  a kind of forced stare in their eyes and a sort of fight or flight attitude that would make anyone have to react negatively.

In essence by anticipating difficulties in meetings…we create difficulties in meetings! (That’s the “law of attraction” gone wrong)

Instead do this:

1.Before the meeting focus on how you are going to make the meeting one that benefits your direct report.

2. Mentally rehearse doing a great job getting a positive outcome for both of you.

3. When in the meeting focus on managing your state. Your state is important. Because if you are stressed and expecting difficulties your direct report will be infected by it. So relax in the knowledge that you have done step 1 and 2 and help your direct report stay resourceful and open…by being resourceful and open yourself!

Good luck with your next former difficult conversation…

how to improve my soft skills?

Tuesday Dec 1, 2009

sometimes i find myself in such a strange situation when i don’t have any reply to my customer’s question. I donot know what to say and at that time customers lose confidence on me and they ask for my supervisor. My supervisor asks me why can’t i deal with the irate customers. I always want to evade those kind of situations. How to talk diplomatic and talk in such a manner that i don’t have to hide from those situations. I need some help to develop my soft skills. Thanks for your suggestions.

When customers ask questions to you, they consider you as an authority in the product that you are selling. What this means, whether you like it or not, you are the authority in answering the question. The key here is that you answer IN THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE. Most of times, you can only help as much as you know how. So, whether you understood the question or the customer’s intention fully or not, you just have to blup out answers.

For the irate customers, they are angry and frustrated for certain reason. They are not angry about you. They are only trying to communicate to you that they are the ones that don’t understand what is going on with the product or situations. In other words, they are claiming that they are stupid. So all you have to do is impart your knowledge of the product, once again, AS BEST AS YOU CAN. The key element being transfered back and forth between you and your customers is INFORMATION. You are not responsible as a counsellor or therapist. You MAY feel sympathetic and attempt to sooth them so how, but not many human beings have the ability to dissect the emotional rupture. You are simply an informant, and if the customer is not satisfied with your answer and continue to be frustrated, you should try again in calm manner, and then talk to your manager about it.

You are a good person, it seems. It is something that you should not lose, but concerning your JOB, you should only be concerned about information transfer. I hope this thought helps.

How to improve writing and communication skills?

Tuesday Dec 1, 2009

I am final year commerce student .As I will graduate soon , I am start looking for the job. I found most of job selection criteria includes excellent writing and communication skills. Can anyone give me some suggestion about how to imporve those skills in halfyear
(ps: I am not native english speaker)

See if your school offers a technical writing course, or something similar in your major.

As for oral skills, take a speech class, or find out if there’s a Toastmaster’s club in your area. Toastmasters is an international club dedicated to helping people improve their speaking and presentation skills. There’s probably a club at your school, or nearby.

Soft skills- does it matter more than good grades?

Tuesday Dec 1, 2009

Employers now seek graduates with soft skills instead of just good paper qualifications. The problem is, what exactly are the so called soft skills? And are they more important than good grades? Why?

please help me with this baffling question. do list out the soft skills and why they are more or less impt than grades. THANKS!

Many employers are demanding "life skills" as they are called, as people do not seem to learn these in school any more. These life skills include listening, following directions, being courteous, interviewing skills (such as finding out what customers want), negotiating (a big one), and others. After a basic education, many skills can be taught (depends on the field).

Google "job-readiness certificate" and you will find many articles about this. I work in this area.

how can I communicative and interpersonal skills?

Tuesday Dec 1, 2009

I just started my career and I got this job, I have passed almost 6 months, I have to pass more than 6 months to go. for my career, I worked very hard in restuarant and I paid my university fees and I completed my degree, Now I am working in a private concern with minimum salary bcoz of lack of experience, to have bright future, I know I should have excellent communicative skills and interpersonal skills , then only I can stand in this competitive world. so any one please give me suggestions and any sites for developing those skills, or advice needed for me. thanks.
iam working very hard to develop my english fluency and get knowledge in Hindi(my mother tongue is tamil), I came from struggled life, but I think I am struggling commn skills for lack of regular college full time education, but I am self confident and hard working guy, please guide me

I am confused whether you want to improve your english speaking skills or hindi speaking skills. Going from your post, your written english seems good. To practise speaking any language, the only way is just start speaking in it, without feeling shy of making mistakes. No other way. See lot of movies, tv serials, radio and tv news broadcasts. Befriend people who speak these languages and keep listening to their conversations and start speaking with them. This is the best way to learn. Do not waste your money in any coaching centre or online tutorial. all the best

What could be the consequences for not having good communication skills?

Thursday Nov 19, 2009

I need help with this. I am doing an essay about communication skills. I know it may sound dumb, but I need to come up with a 750 word essay! Please help.

Some of the complications that could arise are someone misunderstanding what you’re trying to say, having to repeat yourself, having to rephrase what you say, not being able to get your point across or the image of poor social skills.

The perfect example that you could write your paper on is the whole "Who’s on first?" comedy schtick done by Abbot and Costello. Here’s a link to the entire transcript of their routine: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/humor4.shtml

Do you value a resume that emphasizes "soft" skills or concrete qualifications and experience?

Thursday Nov 19, 2009

For example, when listing work experience should I emphasize quantifiable contributions and situations or personal growth? In my opinion, talking about "soft skills" is mostly BS but then again I’m a college student. So what do you, employees/employers in the financial services industry have to say? List your position if applicable.
spam on someone else’s question
thanks alot Lexa! That’s what I suspected. If you don’t mind me asking, what do you do?

The problem with listing soft skills is that most employers tend to discount them because until you prove you have them, there is no real way to check on them. To make matters more complicated, much of your competition tends to also possess soft skills and that makes it difficult to set you apart from the competition. Hard skills are important to set you apart from everyone else.
