How do some people manage with conversations really well with older people?
Posted by admin | Under Uncategorized Friday Nov 13, 2009how do some people manage so well with their conversations like they don’t have to think at all?like for me I have many topics with people similar with my age group, but for talking with older adults,Im really bad at it and end up don’t know what to say cuz you cant swear or say anything disrespectful and I just end up not saying anything and feel so lame.Hoping to improve on this and become more successful so any answer is appreciated!
because you have to engage in meaningful conversation.
LOL just kidding, but if you have some humour, smarts, experience, and/or wisdom under your belt, then you can relate better to the people who likely have a few of these traits (older people). Personally, I love talking with older (not crazy…well maybe..) people, because they often have good advice/wisdom to share…and that can be a big help in life. Plus–it often lights up that smile of theirs to have someone listen

I’m 16.
I can only speak for my self on this, but for me it had to do with how i was raised and where i lived growing up. I was the youngest one around, and their were no kids in my neighborhood so i didn’t have much of a choice but to speak to older people. My suggestion for you is to be up to date on world events and news, talk with older people in your family or perhaps get a job where you have to communicate with all age groups(such as cashier or restaurant work or if you have the education/experience office manager, personal assistant or any type of public relations job. If you aren’t knowledgeable about the topic, simply say that and ask the older person to explain/discuss it with you. Hope this helped alittle

I am 42 and yes even we or I as an adult can try too have a conversation with my wifes aunt and she is like 103 yrs old… I try too be respectful and understand her but it does seem as if I can not always do that…
I think we all have gone throuh that, its because older adults have a diffrence that there generation was more so brought up too listen first and only speeck if your being spoken too…

It’s good that you want to improve this skill because it’s an important one. It’s also good that you know not to be disrespectful when speaking with older people. Now, you need to relax, be yourself (except for the cussing) and let it roll. Adults understand that younger people aren’t so great at talking to them, but they do appreciate an effort!

I guess if you are really interested in talking w/ older people–I’d have to know your definition of older! I’m nearing 80, so that’s old to me. Usually, with most anybody, people like to talk with someone who is interested in hearing their opinions and thoughts. Older people are usually retired and out of the action, so to speak. So they fall back upon the exciting things that they used to do. Your LISTENING does the trick.
